The Thirteenth Constellation

July 3, 2007

night sky

As you might guess from the header and title of my blog, the night sky has always held a strange fascination for me.  Perhaps this is because they are so orderly.  No wonder man has seen pictures in the sky almost since the advent of written language.  Oh, and incidentally the person who comments and correctly identifies the constellation in the image above gets treated by me to the Starbucks poison of thier choice, minus the astronomy lecture  :).  I’ll give you five seconds (Jeopardy theme plays ominously in the background).  Finished?  Okay then…is that your final answer?

Billions of points of light, rearranging themselves, fluctuating in intensity.  Some are intimidated by the sheer vastness of the universe; I am calmed.  My belated study of astronomy began when Mircat visited this past weekend.  Charles, Miriam and I drove to nearby Shultz pass and spent a good hour gazing up at the sky, contemplating the meaning of life (Miriam and I are agreed about the supremacy of chocolate, while Charles argues for tacos).  The next night, we made the trek to Lowell Observatory.  The last time I visited Lowell, I was a gawky eighth grader in town for a band competition  (yes, I do play flute and yes, there was an incident one summer at band camp 😀 ).  Impressively, we were able to see the rings of Saturn.  Chilled from our nighttime endeavors, the three of us proceeded to Outback where we warmed ourselves with good food and good conversations.

Phillipians 2:14-15 is a reminder to:

14 Do everything without complaining or arguing, 15 so that you may become blameless and pure, children of God without fault in a crooked and depraved generation, in which you shine like stars in the universe.

I am grateful that, like the stars which often are born in interconnected pairs, I am privileged to walk side by side with friends who sharpen me and challenge me to shine more brightly than I’d sometimes like.  Instead of deifying the stars and planets, as the ancient Greeks did, I notice the fingerprints of the Creator scattered across the heavens.  They still speak, if only we bend our ears to the stillness and our eyes to the points of light that make the darkness bearable.

A Moving Experience…

I told her we weren’t moving for another two weeks, but guess who wanted to make sure she wasn’t left behind :D.

Oh, and by the way…

Happy Anniversary, my darling husband. I am blessed to be your wife. We can truly say that we are more in love today, in a fuller sense of the word, than we were exactly a year ago when we wed. Thank you for choosing me and loving me.

One year past, Lord willing, many more to come :).

"…a teacher's life for me!"

Zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz…That's what I SHOULD be doing! My classroom is packed up (99% at least-I just have to double-check 🙂 ) and I just finished entering and bubbling in my final grades for this year; even better, I actually have about 4 hours to devote to sleep :D. Thus, with a feeling of accomplishment, I am going to introduce my head to my favorite soft pillow-they've missed each other :).

Song: I gave you a hint with the title of this post :).

Mood: exhausted but accomplished.

The picture, by the way, represents me in about 10 minutes 🙂 🙂 🙂

Feeling: Over My Head
Song: "Under Pressure"

overwhelming (adj): the reality of having two weeks to unpack a house, create a classroom environment with very little technology and no budget, plan at least three weeks worth of lessons, create an inspiring syllabus, understand the psyche of the average American 7th grader, figure out where the faculty bathrooms are (more important than non-educators can realize) and find a decent recipe for valium (I mean, um, chocolate chip) cookies.

Can you tell I had my first day of orientation today?

Here's a picture of my job site:

And here's our apartment:

I'm sure you can figure out how close they are 🙂

Happy Tuesday

Cave Dwelling

July 27, 2005

Mood: Sophisticated
Song: "Brown-Eyed Girl"

Red is the color of the day, in honor of my new and improved hairstyle. My husband and I arrived in L.A. yesterday and spent the night at the home of our close friends Miriam and Anthony. Tony was studying for a PA test, so we helped by taking on the role of patients in various scenarios (I, unfortunately, was an 18-year old high school football star suffering from migranes. I won't even mention Mir's symptoms. Today we dropped Charles off in Hemet, then Mir and I proceeded to spend a girl day at the Aveda salon, complete with *phenomenal* lavender mint tea from the Coffee Bean/Tea Leaf. Quite extraordinary. Life as a redhead is, so far, pretty much the same compared to life as a brunette, but then again the color looks pretty natural. I guess I shouldn't have admitted the color and you'd never know. My secret's certainly out. I also got at least 10 inches trimmed off my hair, leaving it just below shoulder length (still technically long, I know, but I'm pretty freaked out about how short it is). My newly layered locks are exceptionally curly as well. If I'm able, I'll post a picture from my phone. Miriam looks, by the way, just like a mod child from the '60's.

By the way, the cave is my dad's refuge from the world of poker-I drove 100 miles tonight, so you can imagine how exhausted I am. More news as events warrant.

here's the back porch (1 of 3) of our new apartment.

and here's the inside (our living room). If the camera had been lower you would have seen my own personal garbage scow (my Sheltie, Rosie). In the past 2 days, she's gotten into:

1 bag of my husband's favorite salmon jerky
1 entire container of cherry tomatoes
1 bag of grapes (poisonous for dogs in large dose, but she seems fine)
1 bag movie popcorn kernals
